Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is The Difference between onsite and offsite backups?

Onsite means your backups are housed at the same location as your origonal data. Prior to Broadband Internet, offsite backup usually ment taking a backup copy home once a week. Not very reliable or safe.
Today with high speed internet data transfer between remote locations is just a click away. Storing updated backups remotely eliminates the possibility that the same catastrophe that damaged the computer ,(office or community), would also destroy your important data.

Q: What if we already have a tape, or other media backup system?

Using a tape backup system and a remote backup system offers the best of two worlds. Critical files, like billing, customer contact files and databases can be kept on the remote backup system. While, the tape system can be used to create a full backup of the entire system once or twice a month, instead of on a daily basis. The tapes and drive will last longer and require less maintenance. Now you can have a quick and easy way to retrieve critical files and databases without the hassle of searching through tapes.

Q: How long will a remote backup take?

The amount of time it takes to run a backup depends on several factors; the amount of data being backed up, the compression rate of the data, and the internet connection speed. After the initial upload of the customer's data the incremental backups will run much quicker.

Q: Why Are Remote Backups Considered More Beneficial than just onsite?

Only an internet connection is needed to update or access your backups, eliminating the need for expensive backup equipment and/or media. Remote storage protects data from localised disasters and is available at any time from anywhere.

Q: How Secure Are Remote Backups?

As with any backup the level of security is dependant upon ease of access. With ODH Security is of utmost concern. All data transfer is secured with SSL. insuring the security of data while in transit. Physical access to remote storage and servers is limited & Documented. Remote access is strictly regulated & logged.

Q: Does ODH or it's personell Have Access to My Files?

Yes, & No, Depending your level of service, and agreed upon access. Authorised ODH personell can see all files on the servers. In addition these personell may have access to move, your files or assist in helping you transfer files. No ODH personell or anyone else can read any files that you have locked with encryption. Details for encrypting and compression your files for remote storage are available to ODH clients in our help and totorial section.

Q: What is encryption?

Encryption is basically a mathematical formula that scrambles a data file. And the only way to unscramble it is with the encryption code.
